Peony - Paeonia

The peony with its massive, fragrant flowers is one of the most popular flowers throughout the world, and is protected and idolised by the Chinese and Japanese. The peony is a symbol of luxury and indulgence so it is the perfect gift for someone special.
Peonies are available in a range of colours including baby pinks and peaches, and deep pink and rich maroon. Pure white peonies are very popular in bridal bouquets, and there is also a pale yellow version of the flower which can be rare.
With very large, often scented flowers, the peony is a favourite flower worldwide. With approximately 33 species of flower in the Paeonie genus, there are many colours and sizes to choose from. The flowers are native to Europe, Asia and North America, and are also popular garden flowers.
Available as flowering stems between May and July, they are exclusive editions to many bouquets during this period each year, they are in huge demand, and are very popular in wedding floral designs.
Once established as a garden plant, the peony can produce amazing blooms each year for decades, but it does not like to be uprooted and moved.
Flower Symbolism:
The peony is known as the ‘flower of riches and honour’ in China and is widely used symbolically in Chinese art, as well as being a traditional floral symbol of China. Peony motifs, especially bright red ones, can be found often in Chinese silks and in cheerful wood carvings.
Mischievous nymphs were said to hide in the petals of the Peony, therefore this magnificent flower was often given the meaning of shame or bashfulness in the Language of Flowers.
Did you know...
A nectar often forms on the outside of the flower buds of peonies as they are growing, and therefore this flower planted in the garden often attract ants.
Peonies are often incorrectly called a 'peony rose'. They are not, however, related to the rose.
In Japanese medicine, peony root was used as a treatment for convulsions.
In 1957 the peony became the state flower of Indiana.
