Spring clean away the January blues

By Sarah
20th January 2017

Most people I speak to dislike January and want to disappear under the duvet until Spring. After December’s festivities and fun, friends and family say they struggle with the return to work, cold weather and dark mornings. January even has Blue Monday which this year was on the 16th.

Cheerily labelled the most depressing day of the year, it’s supposed to be when we feel the after effects of the Christmas bloat both on our waistlines and our wallets - and the day we’re most likely to ditch those well-intentioned New Year’s resolutions. There’s no acknowledged science behind Blue Monday but it’s recognised every year.

However, I’m casting aside the gloom and heralding Purple, Yellow and White Mon-YAY! Looking out the kitchen window, I can already see signs of Spring in the garden with Daffodils, Crocuses and Hyacinths starting to wake from their Winter slumber. Granted, we’re just at the green-shoot stage but it’s a good sign that longer daylight hours and warmer weather is on its way.

Unsurprisingly nature features highly in our favourite things about Spring with new fruits, more colourful gardens and enjoying the outdoors topping research by Fustany.com. Spring scent came second in the poll so bring Spring indoors with a heady Scented Hyacinth and Tulip bouquet. Lilies, Sweet Peas and Freesias can all give a Spring aroma to your house, so surprise a Winter-hating friend or loved one a slice of Spring with a striking Springtime Surprise bouquet which has scented yellow Freesias and purple Tulips.

Spring also heralds the traditional clean. However, research says rather that doing a once a year blitz, these days we’re more likely to adopt a clean as you go approach dusting and decluttering year round. A Spring clean is swept under the carpet because we’re too busy, with a staggering 85% of people believing it could become thing of the past, according to a recent study. I have a new excuse not to do the housework!

If you’re not too busy hoovering, catch another impressive glimpse of Spring by getting out and seeing beautiful carpets of Snowdrops. The dainty white flowers transform our woodland, parks and gardens in January and February.

Top spots to see displays include Newark Park in Gloucestershire where they mingle with aconites and cyclamen and Stowe in Buckinghamshire where peeping blooms develop into white drifts in the fairytale-sounding Sleeping Wood. You can check out top snowdrop displays using the National Trust website.

Browse our Spring gifts and banish those Winter blues.
