HOW TO MAKE ANAUTUMN WREATH

A beginner-friendly, step-by-step guide using natural ingredients and dried flowers

Wreaths aren’t just for Christmas. In fact, autumn is one of the best times to make one when nature is at its most beautiful, bursting with warm reds, golden yellows and rustic textures. Whether you’re foraging on a countryside walk or repurposing old bouquets, an autumn wreath is the perfect way to bring the season to your front door.

And you don’t need to be a professional florist to make something gorgeous. With a few natural materials and a simple base, you can create a wreath that’s full of texture, colour and personality.

What You’ll Need

Before you begin, gather the following tools and materials. You’ll find most of these at your local garden centre, a nature walk or even a DIY shop:

Top tip: Start saving your old bouquets! Dried flowers from fading arrangements are perfect for wreath-making. Discover our best tips on how to dry your flowers.

Step-by-Step Guide

Here’s our step-by-step guide where we show you how to make your own autumn wreath and we’re using our Autumn Dreams Letterbox Bouquet to do it.

Step 1: Prep Your Base

Attach your wire securely to the wreath ring by looping and knotting it around the edge. If using moss, create a thick layer across the frame by wrapping the moss and wire at even intervals. This will help give your wreath more volume and structure. We used a 30cm birch wreath ring. You can find similar on Amazon.

Step 2: Trim Your Materials

Trim all your foliage and flower stems to roughly 8–15 cm in length. Remove any lower leaves to keep stems neat and easier to wire.

Step 3: Make Mini Bundles

Take 2–3 stems of foliage and stagger them slightly so the tips sit at different levels. Wire each mini bundle to secure the stems. These small, layered bunches will form the building blocks of your wreath.

Step 4: Attach the Ribbon & Bundles

Start by tying your ribbon securely to the top of the willow ring so it’s ready to hang later. Then, lay your first bundle onto the frame and tightly wrap floral wire around the stems and ring. Keep adding bundles, overlapping each one to cover the stems before it, working in a spiral or zigzag for a natural look.

Step 5: Build in Your Flowers

Once the frame is covered in foliage, begin adding in your dried flowers. These are more delicate, so tuck them into gaps or wire them in loosely towards the end. Focus on balance and spread colour and texture evenly across the wreath.

Step 6: Hang Your Wreath

Simply hang your wreath directly on a hook or nail on your door. This keeps the look clean and classic, letting the wreath take center stage without the distraction of a ribbon or bow.

Whether you’re crafting for your own front door or gifting to a friend, an autumn wreath is a beautiful, personal way to embrace the season. Happy wreath-making!
