International DayOf Happiness

We could all do with a little sprinkling of happiness in our lives. Whether it’s spending the day with a special friend, going on that holiday you’ve always dreamed about or even something as simple as sending a bouquet to a loved one. Did you know that there is a special day dedicated to being happy? It’s called the International Day of Happiness.

Read on to learn more about this special day and how you can celebrate it!

What is the International Day of Happiness?

Well, in the words of the United Nations ‘It’s a day to be happy, of course!’ And who are we to disagree.

It’s a day dedicated to promoting happiness across the globe, encouraging us all to work toward a happier, more inclusive world. It’s also a crucial step toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly good health and well-being. Whether it’s governments, international organisations, schools, or individuals, we all share the responsibility of supporting happiness. It’s about investing our time and effort into doing what brings us joy, not just for ourselves but for everyone around us. By taking action, big or small, we can help make the world a happier place to live.

When is the International Day of Happiness?

If you’d like to join this fabulous celebration, the International Day of Happiness 2025 takes place on March 20th. On this day, the United Nations launches their yearly World Happiness Report which explores key insights that can change the way we perceive "happiness" and offers great guidance on how we can promote well-being throughout our lives.

The 20th of March was officially declared the International Day of Happiness by the United Nations back on July 12, 2012. The UN wanted to recognise happiness and well-being as essential global goals. They also reminded us of the importance of a more inclusive, fair, and balanced approach to economic growth, one that supports sustainable development and benefits everyone.

Interestingly, the idea of prioritising happiness actually started in Bhutan back in the early 1970s. For over 50 years Bhutan has placed national happiness above national income and famously adopted the goal of Gross National Happiness (GNH) instead of Gross National Product (GNP). This approach gained global attention when they hosted the "Happiness and Well-Being: Defining a New Economic Paradigm" meeting during the sixty-sixth session of the UN General Assembly.

How to celebrate

There are countless ways to celebrate, but what brings someone the most happiness depends on what they (or you) enjoy most. It could be tied to a favourite hobby, a fun activity, or even something as simple as a cosy day binge-watching their most-loved movies.

If you’re looking for inspiration, here are a few popular ideas that are almost guaranteed to bring joy to anyone and make your celebration extra special:

Surprise With Flowers

Nothing delivers a smile quite like being surprised with a stunning bouquet. Don’t believe us? It’s been scientifically proven that flowers release oxytocin and serotonin, known as the "happy" hormones, which make you feel great.

Beyond that, the colours of flowers also have an incredible effect on mood, thanks to the power of colour therapy. For example, yellow brings happiness, orange boosts energy, blue creates calmness and red sparks love and passion. You don’t even need a reason to send a bouquet and you could simply send a bunch of flowers because you feel like it.

Be Happy at Home

Being happy in your home is super important. In fact, it should be one of the happiest places to be! After all, it’s where you spend most of your time (especially if you’re working from home) so it’s worth making it a space that brings a smile.

One simple way to boost the happiness factor is to create a special sunny spot just for you. This could be a cosy chair next to a window where the light streams in, or a tucked-away corner of your garden where you can sit with your morning coffee.

You could also design a reading nook, with comfy cushions, your favorite books, and a soft throw for cooler days. Or maybe it’s a quiet corner where you can pause, breathe, and simply enjoy the beauty around you. These small, thoughtful spaces can bring a sense of calm and joy to your home, turning it into a place that feels even more like your own personal retreat.

Head outside

It’s proven, that if you head outside it can make you happier. In fact, scientific research shows that spending 20 hours or more a week with nature not only makes you more productive (up to 41%) but also gives you a boost of happiness*.  So pull on your boots or trainers and get yourself down to the park, out in the garden or take a hike across the countryside.

Get together

Nothing makes us happier than being with loved ones. So why not message your friends or phone your family and arrange a get-together. You could gather them all around for a nice meal, head out for a coffee or a walk in the park. Whatever you do, make sure it involves lots of chatting and laughter!

Take the challenge

Why not head to the Day of Happiness website and try their 10-Day Happiness Challenge. This is a free online programme to boost your well-being by taking small actions to live happier. Even better it’s based on scientific research.
